Explore the world of marsh sparrows in Southeastern NC. Seaside, Saltmarsh, and Nelson’s Sparrows all spend their winters within the thin band of saltmarshes along the coast of North Carolina. Learn about the study of these fascinating creatures’ winter activity including movement, population size, and seasonal survival. Evangelyn Buckland will also discuss threats to these species and the marshes whose beauty and ecology we all love so much.
Evangelyn Buckland has been a working biologist since 2016. She has done work for the Smithsonian, the National Park Service, and Audubon North Carolina. She received her MS in Marine Biology in December 2020 after studying overwinter survival of marsh sparrows in the lab of Dr. Ray Danner. Also in 2020, she and two collaborators founded the Cape Fear Bird Observatory, a 501(c)(3) devoted to scientific research and community outreach to protect birds and their habitats in the Cape Fear Region. Since graduating, she has been focused on growing this nonprofit as well as working full time on the marsh sparrow project.
