al science laboratory that brings the real world into the lab and teaches
the process of science. Examine eggshells with a microscope\, scale\, and
other common lab tools. Match the sea turtle tracks to the sea turtle who
laid them by examining photos of turtle tracks. Learn why not all baby sea
turtles survive and what you can do to protect hatchlings.

ocean IQ and learn who really lives in the ocean while being safe. This pr
ogram is designed to entertain and educate kids about sea life using a fun
\, interactive format. Kids will learn all about the sea life they are swi
mming with and the way the animals protect themselves. Safety while at the
beach or near water will also be discussed across seven rules such as wha
t to do when swimming alone\, how to help someone in the water\, etc. Kids
will have an opportunity to make sea bottles (plastic bottles that they c
an fill with shells\, crystal sand\, and mermaid magic) that they can take
home.

Curious about how to tell a venomous from a non-v enomous snake? This summer\, local reptile expert Matthew Bookout will tea ch you how to differentiate venomous from non-venomous serpents – useful k nowledge to have when you come across one in your back yard. He will also share tips about caring for snakes and talk about which reptiles make the best pets. Bookout will bring several live snakes to his program each week so that you can see them up close and personal.
\nMatthew Bookout h as been fascinated with reptiles for most of his life and acquired his fir st snake at 13 years old. He says\, “I drove my Mom crazy with snakes and frogs running through the house after they crawled out of shoeboxes from u nder my bed.” With a wealth of knowledge about venomous and non-venomous s nake species\, Bookout wows visitors with his unique personal collection o f snakes. As the local business owner of Ophidian’s Lair\, he takes care of and feeds the Museum’s live venomous and non-venomous snakes.

Georgia Busch for an in-depth look at her recent microplastics sampling ci
tizen science program. Due to findings from the Hurricane Florence marine
debris recovery project\, the Coastal Federation was interested in closely
examining the origins and impacts of microplastics on our region’s beache
s. Following the EPA’s protocol on microplastic sampling for citizen scien
tists\, the Federation recruited approximately 35 volunteers to sample bea
ches and analyze sampling data. The data collected from April to October w
ill be used for additional advocacy efforts aiming to prevent microplastic
s pollution.
Busch is the Coastal Specialist at the Wrightsville B each office of the North Carolina Coastal Federation\, which serves the So utheast region of our coast. She has her Master’s Degree in Coastal and Oc ean Policy from University of North Carolina\, Wilmington in 2021 and has been enjoying her role to protect and restore the coast since.

\nCollogan is a UNCW Environmental Studies graduate and a certified Environmental Educator. He worked for nine years at Airlie Gardens and is now the Consumer Horticulture agent for the NC C ooperative Extension Service based at the New Hanover County Arboretum. Co llogan is a proponent of sustainable gardening and owns a small mixed prod uce farm in Hightsville where he actively composts and uses cover crops. C ollogan was a founding member of the Coastal Composting Council in Wilming ton\, elected to Supervisor of the New Hanover Soil & Water Conservation D istrict in 2021\, and this year he joined the NC Composting Council board.

It has been over 300 years since the death of Edward Teach (a ka Blackbeard)\, who met his fate on the North Carolina coast. His ship\, the Queen Anne’s Revenge\, which ran aground off the Carolina coast is now on the National Register of Historic Places. Towns like Beaufort\, Ocraco ke\, Bath\, and Greenville with spots all along the Outer Banks are steepe d in tales about this vilest of pirates. There are many local opportunitie s to discover the crafts\, commerce\, and genuine historic artifacts of pi rates.

and Conservancy Senior Coastal Educator Jennifer Wiggen will describe the
benefits of outdoor education\, including physical and mental health. Wig
gen will also inspire curiosity about local barrier island ecosystems and
discuss the Conservancy’s research\, wildlife stewardship\, and island sus
tainability programs.
Wiggen graduated from the University of Nort h Carolina at Wilmington with a B.S. in Environmental Studies and a M.S. i n Marine Science. While there\, she interned with the Karen Beasley Sea Tu rtle Center. She later earned her Ph.D. in Marine\, Earth and Atmospheric Science and completed a postdoctoral research and teaching position in Geo science Education at NC State University.

\nThree Not-So-Ordinary Joe
s is the story of how three guys named Joe started Southern literature. Jo
seph Addison\, a famous 18 th century British journalist\, inspired Joseph
Addison Turner to produce the only newspaper ever published on a Southern
plantation. Turner’s apprentice\, Joel Chandler Harris\, recorded slave f
olktales from stories he heard while working on Turner’s plantation newspa
per. Narrating his stories through a fictional character named “Uncle Remu
s\,” Harris’ books established Southern literature.
Julie Hedgepet h Williams\, a resident of Birmingham\, Alabama and regular Ocean Isle Bea ch visitor\, is a professor\, writer\, and author of many popular history books.

ned ships of danger and guided them safely throughout maritime history.

Sandbar Lecture Presenter Todd K. Rhoades i s an officer with the Battery White Historical Association\, the State of South Carolina’s (SC) Provost Marshal at Battery White\, a member of the S outh Carolina Battleground Preservation Trust and the American Battlefield Trust\, and a docent at several civil war sites in the Carolinas. Rhoades ’ lifelong passion for civil war history and preservation has inspired his efforts to preserve the rich history of Battery White\, the city of Georg etown\, and the Winyah Bay region.
